Grants and supports
Some supports that may help with funeral costs.
Grants and payments change from time to time, so please check the current details with Citizens Information or the Department of Social Protection. Your funeral director will also be happy to help.
Supports you may be able to get
- Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant: a once-off payment to a widow, widower or surviving civil partner with dependent children.
- Widow’s, Widower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s Pension: a weekly payment after the death of a spouse or civil partner, with extra for dependent children.
- Guardian’s Payment: a weekly payment to the person caring for a child whose parent or parents have died.
- Continued payments: if the person who died was getting a social welfare payment, it may continue to be paid for a few weeks after the death.
- Exceptional Needs Payment: may help with funeral costs if you have little or no income. Ask your local Community Welfare Officer.
- Funeral expenses under the Occupational Injuries Scheme: if the death was caused by an accident at work or an occupational disease.
- Criminal Injuries Compensation: if a family member died as a result of a crime, you may be able to claim for the funeral expenses and loss of earnings.
